Description
This paragliding site in Bavaria, Germany, is occasionally used and serves as a training and practice slope. It is suitable for ground handling and offers occasional enjoyable soaring with short cross-country flights.
Located in the Bavarian Forest, one of the most beautiful regions for paragliding in Germany, you can reach Windberg via the A3 motorway from Regensburg to Passau. Take the Sankt Englmar exit, head towards Hunderdorf, and then follow the signs to Windberg. The large flying area, situated before the village, can accommodate up to 50 paragliders simultaneously. With west winds, you can enjoy hours of soaring flights. The 70-meter slope is also suitable for thermal flights and training purposes, with a smaller slope on the southern edge ideal for launch practice.
Before using the site, please contact the Bayerwald Flight Center.
You can start your flight at the foot of the Premonstratensian Monastery in Windberg or, for a more mystical experience, in the homeland of the forest prophet Mühlhiasl. This site offers a beautiful practice slope for paragliders against a historical backdrop. However, hang gliders may face difficulties due to ground effect issues. The local tourist office even promotes paragliding in their brochures, although the image used is a photomontage of a parachutist over the practice slope.
To get there, take the Regensburg-Passau motorway, exit at Bogen towards Viechtach, and continue to St. Englmar. After about 10 km, you will arrive at the site. Alternatively, enter 94336 Windberg into your GPS, and you will pass directly by the slope before reaching the village.
With stronger west to northwest winds, soaring with a paraglider is quite feasible, though landing can be tricky due to turbulence caused by trees. Hang gliders do not have a glide path here, so they do not fly at this site.
A first-time visit to this site should definitely include a visit to the Windberg Monastery with its baroque church. For those interested in prophecies, you can explore the birthplace of the forest prophet Mühlhiasl in Apoig, located on the eastern edge of the area. A visit to the Bogenberg with its magnificent view of the Gäuboden is also recommended, although dense undergrowth and nature conservation regulations prevent flights to the nearby Danube shore.
