Conditions Optimales
Description
Oberemmendorf, located in the Altmühltal region of Germany, is a popular paragliding site known for its excellent soaring and thermal flying conditions, making it a great spot for cross-country flights. The site has been developed by the Drachenfliegerclub Ingolstadt with significant contributions from its members. The launch area includes a ramp and ample space for paragliders.
The site is best suited for flights in northern winds, providing a superb ridge for soaring and a good starting point for thermal flights. However, caution is advised with side winds as the launch site is situated in a forest clearing. Only launch with headwind conditions. The club's pilots are known for their ambitious flights, often heading far east from Oberemmendorf. Note that the ED-R 138 Siegenburg (a bombing range) can be an obstacle for cross-country flights and requires clearance. Currently, this area is inactive on weekends (as per a NOTAM from April 11, 2014), but always check the current status before flying.
A launch fee of €10 (as of 2010) is payable at Gasthof Zimmermann. Guests are allowed only in the presence of club members. For more information, visit the Drachenfliegerclub Ingolstadt website: [DFCI Oberemmendorf](https://www.dfci.de/oberemmendorf).
The landing area by the Altmühl River is relatively easy to approach, with an information board detailing all the rules at the launch site. There is an overflight prohibition over Eggersberg that must be strictly observed.
Parking is available right above the fire pit at the launch site. Do not park in the setup area or on the access road. At the landing site, parking is not allowed; only short stops for loading and unloading are permitted. Follow the traffic direction and avoid driving through the stone quarry.
Special considerations include launching only with a northwest wind and being mindful of gusts. Beware of rotor turbulence and avoid flying back to the ridge in low altitude; use the emergency landing area well behind the ridge if necessary. When walking to the launch site, stick to designated paths and avoid crossing meadows, fields, or private property.
Oberemmendorf is a small slope in the Altmühltal. Initially, only a ramp allowed pilots to clear the bushes. As the number of paragliding pilots in the club grew, the launch site was expanded. Conservationists initially resisted clearing the area for safer launches, but persistent efforts led to the approval of clearing the site, allowing paragliders to launch as well. The launch can be tricky, especially if the wind is not directly from the front.
Flying here offers stunning views of the Altmühltal, a renowned tourist destination. The Altmühl River is typically a narrow, winding valley, though downstream, the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal has altered its appearance. Oberemmendorf is located upstream of the canal's confluence with the Altmühl.
Due to its popularity, the site can get crowded. The number of guest pilots (hang gliders) is limited to five per day, while there is no limit for paragliders. A day membership costs €10 for paragliders and €3 for hang gliders.
