The Männlichen, standing at 2343 meters in the Bernese Alps, offers a prime paragliding experience with stunning views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. Accessible via the Wengen-Männlichen aerial cableway or the Grindelwald-Männlichen gondola, the launch site is situated around 2230 meters on a flatter ridge west of the summit. The actual summit can be reached via a steep UNESCO trail in about 30 minutes. A 20-minute walk (300 meters) towards the Männlichen summit leads to the launch area, located between the cableway and the summit. Launching is possible in two directions. For an eastward launch towards Grindelwald, the entire Männlichen ridge can be utilized. The launch site has some undulations and hollows. Light thermals can be found at the forest edge near Holenstein. For a westward launch towards Lauterbrunnen, the flat couloir is suitable in light west winds. However, strong afternoon sun on the steep west slope below the launch site can create strong thermals, making the launch area turbulent. In autumn, conditions are calmer. Thermals towards Lauterbrunnen can be accessed directly in front of the launch site or along the entire Männlichen ridge. Usage is free, managed by the local Jungfrau Tächi club. Suitability: - Normal launch time towards Grindelwald: 9:00 - 12:00, with light thermals from 10:00. - Normal launch time towards Lauterbrunnen: 9:00 - 17:00, with thermals from 13:00. - Suitable for all normal weather conditions. Ideal for morning flights and especially during Bise conditions. Also suitable for beginners and large groups. Westward towards Lauterbrunnen can be very thermic and is recommended only for experienced pilots. Landing in Lauterbrunnen or Stechelberg requires prior notification to the heliport. Glide flights to the valley station or Lauterbrunnen are impressive in this area (Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau). In winter, launches towards the southwest (steep west/southwest slope) are possible. For flights towards Lauterbrunnen, alternative landing spots include the Wengen valley station, the official landing site in Zweilütschinen, or continuing to Interlaken, though valley winds may pose a challenge. Top landing is possible with west winds for experienced pilots. With decent thermals, pilots can easily gain altitude, fly towards Kleine Scheidegg, Eigergletscher, or the Eiger North Face. Grindelwald can also serve as a turnaround or destination point. Difficulty: In the Lauterbrunnen valley, there is a heliport operated by Air Glacier: Tel 033 8 560 560. Flights to Lauterbrunnen must be registered with the heliport. Avoid flying in southeast and south winds. The area has many lifts, so be cautious of cables.
