Description
Located in the Jura region of Switzerland, the Walenmatt launch site near Gänsbrunnen offers a medium-difficulty paragliding experience at an altitude of 1240 meters. This site is regularly used, especially for afternoon soaring, and it provides good opportunities for cross-country flights. The launch area is a steep forest clearing above Gänsbrunnen, making it an excellent spot for evening soaring.
To reach the launch site, drive from the church in Gänsbrunnen towards Walenmatt in a northeasterly direction. The site is accessible by foot within approximately 5 minutes from the parking area. The coordinates for the launch site are 7.48556157, 47.28478184.
The Walenmatt area is densely forested with some rocky sections, and it is situated at 1239 meters above sea level. The village of Gänsbrunnen, also known as Saint-Joseph in French, is located 8 km northwest of Solothurn. Despite the challenging access roads, the site is a popular evening destination for paragliders.
Typical flight routes head towards Corcelles, and with sufficient altitude gain, it is possible to return to the valley or reach Welschenrohr. Nearby landing zones include Matzendorf, Laupersdorf, and Corcelles, which are accessible under favorable flying conditions.
The neighboring flying area of Niederwiler Stierenberg complements Walenmatt, allowing for launches depending on wind direction: Stierenberg for NW-NE winds and Walenmatt for SW-SE winds.
