This site is regularly used for World Cup launches and offers some cross-country (XC) flying opportunities. The site record is 47.7 km.
Takeoff:
There are multiple takeoff points available. The coordinates provided are for the 'Gondola TO,' located just outside the first section of the gondola. The hang gliding takeoff (HG-TO) is by the top of the second section. The competition paragliding takeoff (PG) is also available.
Landing:
The landing zone is at the foot of the Olympic jumping stadium. Be cautious of the marked power lines.
Getting There:
By train:
- From Tokyo (Shinjuku), take direct trains to Hakuba.
- From Osaka, travel via Nagano and Matsumoto.
From Hakuba Station, you can take a taxi to the landing zone or arrange for a pick-up. To reach the takeoff point, use the gondola.
Comments:
This is a very interesting flight area that often hosts competitions, such as the Pre-PWC in 2008.
Flight Regulation:
You must go through a local paragliding school to be allowed to fly here, as is common in most Japanese flight areas. The visitor fee is 2600¥ per day, plus 860¥ per gondola trip.
Tourism:
Don't miss visiting an 'Onsen' (Japanese hot spring); there are several in and around Hakuba.
