The Bir region in India is recognized as a premier paragliding site, offering exceptional conditions for free flight.

  • Flying Conditions: Bir allows for all-day flying, with favorable conditions for distance flights, especially in October and November, when conditions are excellent for paragliding.
  • Accommodation: There is a variety of accommodation options in Bir, ranging from basic but clean homestays at about 8 USD per day, to more luxurious establishments at 50 USD per day.
  • Cost of Living: A daily budget of 10 USD is generally sufficient for food. The taxi fare to the launch site costs about 7 USD per trip, a cost that can be shared with other pilots.
  • Flight Restrictions: Due to the political situation between Pakistan and India, flying west of the Red Temple ridge is prohibited, and this restriction could last for a few years. Additionally, flying too close to Mandi is prohibited due to disturbances during sports matches.
  • Airspace Information: There is no online information regarding airspace restrictions in Bir. It is advised to consult local officials, such as Suresh/Naresh from the Surya Hotel, for up-to-date advice.

Weather Conditions: The weather in Bir is generally conducive to paragliding, with clear skies and favorable thermal conditions during the prime flying months of October and November. The monsoon season, from June to September, is less suitable for flying due to heavy rainfall and strong winds.

Surrounding Paragliding Sites:

  • Billing: Located just above Bir, Billing is the take-off site for paragliding and hosts the annual Paragliding World Cup. The site offers spectacular views and reliable conditions for thermic flights.
  • Dharamshala: A bit further away, Dharamshala offers paragliding opportunities with breathtaking views of the Dhauladhar range. It's more suited for experienced pilots due to its dynamic conditions.
  • Manali: Another notable site in the region is Manali, which, although primarily known for its skiing, also offers paragliding experiences, especially during the summer months when the weather is favorable.

Bir is a famous paragliding destination, offering exceptional flying conditions, a variety of accommodation options for all budgets, and a welcoming community for pilots. However, it's important to stay informed about local restrictions and airspace conditions to ensure a safe and enjoyable flying experience.

Billing, located in Himachal Pradesh, India, is one of the most renowned paragliding sites in Asia. The takeoff point is at an altitude of 2440 meters, with a height difference of 1043 meters to the landing zone in Bir, a local village known for its hospitality and accommodations. This site is highly frequented and offers excellent opportunities for cross-country flying along the nearly 200 km long Dhauladhar range. Billing is celebrated for its accessibility to pilots of all levels, from beginners to top competition pilots. Despite its Himalayan location, it is considered a benign site with safe flying conditions. The best time to visit is October and November when the weather is stable and thermals are favorable. Earlier in the year, the thermals can be quite strong, and the weather may be unstable with rain. The region is well-documented and has a strong community of local pilots. The site record for cross-country flying is 99.2 km. For those interested in acro flying, Billing also offers suitable conditions, although there is no water landing available. Traveling to Billing from New Delhi can be done via flight to Gaggal Airport near Dharamsala, by train to Pathankot followed by a taxi, or by an A/C bus from Delhi ISBT to Bir. The takeoff point is approximately 15.3 km from the Bir Tibetan Colony taxi stand. Weather hazards to be aware of include leeward conditions and cloud suck. It is recommended to carry a SPOT device and VHF radio, and always share your flight plans with someone. For safety, avoid flying north until you are experienced enough and carry essential survival gear like a cigarette lighter and knife.
