Description
Goldeck offers one of the most stunning views over Spittal and Lake Millstatt. You can reach the launch sites from Spittal via the Goldeck cable car. There's also a toll road leading up to Goldeck, but the cable car is the more convenient option. From the Seetal parking lot at the end of the scenic road, it's about a one-hour hike to the summit and launch sites. At nearly 2,100 meters above sea level, the green summit provides a breathtaking panorama of the entire mountain range, including views of the Großglockner, which is sure to thrill any pilot.
Goldeck is an excellent alternative to Tschiernock in north or west wind conditions. With the right wind strength, you can launch in almost any direction. The launch sites are better suited for hang gliders, each equipped with a wooden ramp. For paragliders, the main launch site facing north, just above the mountain station, is the most interesting. In north wind conditions, Goldeck serves as an ideal ridge for soaring at the end of the Tauern Valley. When the north wind is present, you can soar back and forth along the summit area.
However, Goldeck is not an ideal mountain for cross-country flights due to its north-facing orientation and challenging terrain. Experienced pilots can still embark on cross-country routes from here, typically flying along the northern slopes towards Villach. Other launch sites require a high level of experience for paragliders, as they involve navigating around ridges and mountain flanks.
The main landing field is near the valley station of the Goldeck cable car in the Spittal meadows. Be aware that this landing site is occasionally used by helicopters.
