Description

Goldeck, located in Austria, offers one of the most stunning views over Spittal and the Millstätter See. You can reach the launch sites via the Goldeckbahn cable car from Spittal or by a toll road. However, the cable car is the more convenient option, as it saves you a nearly one-hour hike from the Seetal parking lot at the end of the scenic panoramic road to the summit and launch sites. At an elevation of approximately 2,100 meters, the green summit provides a breathtaking panorama of the surrounding mountains, including views extending to the Großglockner. This makes Goldeck a favorite among pilots. The site is particularly suitable for hang gliders, with wooden ramps available at each launch site. For paragliders, the main launch site facing north, just above the mountain station, is the most appealing. The north-facing slope is ideal for soaring, especially when the north wind is blowing, making it a perfect ridge for dynamic soaring. Despite its beauty, Goldeck is not an ideal site for cross-country flights due to its challenging terrain and north-facing relief. Experienced pilots can still embark on cross-country routes, typically along the northern slopes towards Villach. Other launch sites require a high level of skill, as pilots must navigate around ridges and mountain flanks. The large landing field is near the valley station of the Goldeckbahn in the Spittal-Auen. Be cautious, as this landing area is occasionally used by helicopters. For those interested in exploring further, flights to Villach/Drobatsch, Gerlitzen, or the Oderdrautal are common, with occasional trips to Tschiernock. The area is renowned for its excellent flying conditions, with gentle and smooth thermals due to its exposed location. West launches should only be attempted by experienced pilots and under weak wind conditions or afternoon thermals. Reliable updrafts can be found over the ridge west of Baldramsdorf. South launches should only be attempted if you are confident in utilizing the thermals or reaching the landing site. Goldeck is generally a demanding area that requires careful assessment, particularly due to the extensive ridges and flanks. Always be mindful of the cable car wires. During landing, be aware that helicopters may also use the landing field. For soaring conditions, the north slope between the mountain station and Martennock (large summit cross) offers excellent opportunities, especially in winter with a north wind. For more information, visit: [Goldeck Bergbahnen](http://www.goldeck-spittal.at/sommer/index.php) Goldeck is a great alternative to Tschiernock during north and west wind conditions. The launch sites are mainly suited for hang gliders, with the north launch being particularly interesting for paragliders. The north wind makes Goldeck an excellent ridge for soaring but not ideal for cross-country flights. Cross-country routes typically follow the northern slopes towards Villach. Other launch sites require significant experience for paragliders due to the need to navigate around corners.
