Why Go to Triglav for Paragliding

Triglav, located in the heart of the Julian Alps in Slovenia, is a prime destination for paragliding enthusiasts. The area offers breathtaking views of the Triglav National Park, Slovenia's highest mountain, and its surrounding peaks and valleys. The unique geographical features of the region create ideal conditions for thermal and cross-country flying, making it a sought-after location for both beginners and experienced pilots.

Best Time to Go Paragliding in Triglav

The best time for paragliding in Triglav is from late spring to early fall, typically May through September. During these months, the weather conditions are most favorable, with warmer temperatures and stable thermal activity that provide excellent flying conditions. Summer months, in particular, offer longer daylight hours, allowing for extended flights and the opportunity to fully enjoy the stunning alpine scenery.

Local Weather Specifics

The weather in the Triglav area is characterized by a mix of alpine and Mediterranean climates, leading to warm summers and cold winters. For paragliding, it's crucial to be aware of the local weather patterns, including the development of afternoon thermals and the possibility of sudden weather changes due to the mountainous terrain. Pilots should always check the local weather forecast and consult with local flying clubs or guides before heading out to fly.

Additional Information to Know

  • Safety and Regulations: Ensure you are familiar with the local flying regulations and safety requirements. Slovenia has specific rules for paragliding that must be followed.
  • Flying Sites: There are several take-off and landing sites around Triglav and the Julian Alps. It's recommended to connect with local paragliding clubs or schools for guidance on the best sites according to your skill level and the current weather conditions.
  • Equipment and Guides: For those who do not have their own equipment or are looking for guided flying experiences, there are several paragliding schools and rental services in the area that can provide equipment, courses, and tandem flights.

While Triglav offers exceptional opportunities for paragliding, it's essential to approach the sport with respect for the environment and prioritizing safety at all times.

Monte Lussari 2

Paragliding map of
Optimal Wind Direction
NNE NE ENE WNW NW NNW

Optimal Speed (kmh)

At an altitude of 1736 meters with a height difference of 919 meters, this paragliding site in Italy offers a medium difficulty level. It is regularly used and is suitable for soaring, with the possibility of small cross-country flights. The launch site is steep but spacious, even with little wind. In light south winds, it's advisable to wait for a no-wind phase before attempting to fly to the south side of the mountain. Camporosso is located at the base of Monte Lussari, a 1788-meter-high mountain that has been a pilgrimage site for nearly 600 years. Today, it is accessible via a modern cable car. Paragliders have various launch options and good thermals, making it an excellent spot for beginners to learn thermal flying. The north-facing launch sites allow for takeoff even in north winds, which is uncommon in the surrounding areas. On thermally active days, it's best to fly to the south side of the mountain. The south launch site near the summit cross is ideal if there is enough updraft. From the north launch site, you can fly around the mountain to reach the west or south sides easily. There are no launch options towards the northeast, and the launch site from the summit cross towards the south is only suitable for experienced paragliders. Monte Lussari is a beautiful pilgrimage site with accommodation options at the summit. For soaring in strong east winds, the neighboring mountain to the west is recommended. If you can't make it back to the landing site at the valley station, you can land in the valley near Valbruna. Cable Car Operating Hours: Monday to Saturday: 9:00 AM to 5:15 PM Sundays and Holidays: 8:30 AM to 6:15 PM Special Dates: May: 28-29 June: 02-05 Summer Season: June 11 - September 18 September: 24-25 October: 01-02 For more details, you can check out these videos: [Video 1](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXKuh5ehJL0) [Video 2](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2peGn8HSIPQ)

Camporosso, located at the base of Monte Lussari (1788 m), has been a pilgrimage site for nearly 600 years for Austrian Carinthians and Slovenians. Today, a modern cable car provides access to this scenic mountain. Paragliders will find various launch sites and excellent thermals, making it an ideal spot for beginners to learn thermal flying. The north-facing launch sites allow for takeoffs even with north winds, which is uncommon in the surrounding areas. On thermally active days, it's best to fly to the south side of the mountain. The optimal launch point is the south launch site near the summit cross, but only if there is sufficient updraft. xxx Dreiländereck

Paragliding map of
Optimal Wind Direction
WNW NW NNW

Optimal Speed (kmh)

The Dreiländereck paragliding site, located in the Arnoldstein holiday region, marks the intersection of three countries: Slovenia, Italy, and Austria. The site is accessible via the '3-Länder-Jet' chairlift, which takes about 15 minutes from the valley station to the mountain station at 1,506 meters above sea level. The lift operates during both summer and winter seasons. The takeoff area is situated directly west of the mountain restaurant '3-Länder-Treff.' However, due to the site's infrequent use and the difficulty of getting above the trees in low wind conditions, it is not highly recommended. Additionally, the site was reportedly closed in 2016. For those who still wish to visit, the Dreiländereck offers stunning views of the Karawanken, the Julian Alps, the Gail Valley, and the Villach Basin. The takeoff directions are towards the north, northeast, and northwest. Landing is possible on the fields west of the valley station. Be cautious of south winds, as they create lee conditions, making takeoff challenging due to the surrounding trees. For more information, you can visit the official website: [Dreiländereck](http://www.3laendereck.at). Webcams for current conditions can be found here: [Dreiländereck Webcams](http://dreilaendereck.it-wms.com/index.php). To reach Dreiländereck, take the Arnoldstein exit from highway A2. Ensure you have a valid road tax sticker ('Vignette'). Follow the signs to Dreiländereck, where the ski slopes are visible from a distance. You can either take the lift or hike up, with the lift being a more convenient option, especially in winter.

This site offers a unique paragliding experience with stunning views of the Karawanken, Julian Alps, Gail Valley, and Villach Basin. The takeoff point is situated at an elevation of 1,506 meters, accessible via the '3-Länder-Jet' three-seater chairlift. The lift ride from the valley station to the mountain station takes approximately 15 minutes. Both summer and winter seasons are operational. The primary takeoff directions are towards the north, northeast, and northwest. Landing is possible on the fields west of the valley station. Note that the site is rarely used and primarily offers short flights. It was reportedly closed in 2016, so verify current status before planning your visit. Bovec Kanin Postaja D

Paragliding map of
Optimal Wind Direction
ESE SE SSE

Optimal Speed (kmh)

This paragliding site is located near the town of Bovec in the Soca Valley, Slovenia. The launch area is situated at an altitude of 2096-2270 meters and is considered medium-difficult. In winter, you can start from various ski slopes and hills around the top station of the cable car. In summer, it's recommended to walk down the ski slope for about 5-10 minutes from the Canin cable car top station to reach the launch area at approximately 1930 meters. Be cautious as the ground consists of small rocks, which can cause lines to snag during takeoff. In summer 2008, a straw-covered net was placed below the top station to facilitate easier setup of the glider and lines, with three wind indicators around it. The launch site faces south and the area is known for strong thermals, making cross-country flights possible in all directions. However, be aware of frequent overdevelopment, thunderstorms, and very strong thermals. For flights, aside from a glide down to Bovec (a 1,700-meter altitude difference), cross-country flights along the Soca Valley and adjacent mountain ranges are possible. Landing can be done on numerous meadows around Bovec, with a windsock located directly across the road from the valley station. Pay attention to the control zone of the small airport in Bovec, which has sailplane and motorized aircraft operations. The cable car from Bovec to Kanin (2,000m or 2,200m) starts operating at 7 AM in the summer, offering the possibility of a calm morning flight. The cable car runs on weekends and certain weekdays during the summer and winter seasons.
