The Dachstein, standing at 2661 meters, is a challenging site primarily suited for experienced pilots. Known for its association with the X-Alps, it is not frequently flown despite its impressive altitude. The site is more renowned for cross-country (XC) flights passing over it rather than starting from it.
The main launch site is a walk-and-fly, located at 2700 meters, transitioning directly into the 1000-meter drop of the Dachstein South Face. The launch area is typically covered in frozen snow or ice, which can make takeoff tricky, especially in stronger winds. The surface is generally even and slightly inclined, but the hard snow can pose challenges. Pilots should ensure their wing is properly inflated and stable before committing to the launch.
This high-alpine site is best flown with a south wind of 10-20 km/h at the launch area. Despite its height, the site usually offers moderate XC potential. The regional flight record is 31.1 km, while the site record stands at 48.2 km.
