Description
Zwieselalm, located near Bad Reichenhall, Germany, is a popular spot for experienced paragliders, offering excellent cross-country (XC) opportunities with flights up to 200 km. The main launch site is a steep meadow at 1400 meters, with takeoff directions from southeast to southwest. Small wind indicators are present to assist with takeoff.
The hike to the launch site can be demanding, taking between 60 to 120 minutes, depending on the chosen route. The shorter route starts from the Jochberg parking lot, involving a 500-meter ascent and approximately a 1-hour hike. This route requires a 25-minute drive from Bad Reichenhall. Alternatively, a longer route from the Listwirt parking lot takes about 1.5 hours on a well-marked path through shaded forest areas.
The Zwiesel summit, largely covered with dwarf pines, offers additional launch options. During snow-free periods, launches from Zennokopf (1756m) are possible with west winds. In winter, south to southwest winds allow for launches. The primary launch site is east of Zwieselalm and Kaiser-Wilhelms-Haus.
Landing options include the Bundeswehr sports field or Weitwiese, with a height difference of 950 meters and a distance of about 5 km from the launch site. Pilots should be cautious of the strong east winds in the valley, especially in spring and summer, which can complicate the return journey. The "Bavarian Wind" from the north can also cause turbulence at the launch site.
