Best Conditions
Description
The main launch site at Peterbauerkreuz is ideal for south and east wind conditions. It's a popular spot with pleasant thermal soaring and occasional good cross-country opportunities. The launch site is straightforward and easy to use, and it's conveniently located next to the cable car.
Region: St. Michael im Lungau, Austria. The site record is 104.0 km.
The Sonnenbahn from St. Martin operates only on Wednesdays, but the cable car to Großeck from the village of Hammer runs daily. From there, it's a maximum 25-minute walk to the launch site. From the Sonnenbahn, it’s about a 15-minute walk, so there's little difference.

Speiereck is our main flying mountain. For south and light east winds, we start directly at Peterbauerkreuz. For stronger east winds, you can hike up the ski slope a bit and start from there.
Launch Directions:
South: The main launch site is spacious, clear, and suitable for beginners.
East: For light east winds, you can still start at the main launch site. For pure east winds, hike up the ski slope and start from there. It's also beginner-friendly.
North/East: The northeast launch site is only for experienced pilots. Pay attention to local pilots' advice.
Access:
In summer, access is only possible with DFC-Lungau club vehicles. On flyable days, trips are usually organized every Saturday and Sunday, meeting around 10:00 - 11:00 AM at the Fliegerhütte in St. Martin. During weekdays, coordination with other pilots is necessary. Check the members' page for contact details.
Alternatively, you can take the gondola from Mauterndorf to Großeck and hike about an hour to the launch site. Check the operating times of the Lungau cable cars.
In winter, access is easy with the chairlift from St. Martin to Speiereck. Hang gliders can be transported without short packing. Paragliders have two options: a 20-minute walk to the official launch site or a 5-minute downhill walk followed by a ride on the 4-seater chairlift to the summit. Hang gliders are transported to the launch site by SkiDoo; just inform the staff at the base station.
Takeoff: There are three different takeoff points at Speiereck:
The one at 2000m is mainly used in summer. To get there, contact DFC Lungau (www.dfc-lungau.com). On weekends, they meet at 10:00 AM at the landing place and go up by car.
In winter, you can go up by cable car. You can start at the normal starting place (a 30-minute walk) or go down to the second cable car to reach the summit and start from there.
The area is located in the "Salzburger Sonnenstudio" of Lungau, known for good thermals. You can fly year-round, but the best time is from March to June. Speiereck is not overly crowded.
Thermals are usable from the morning, with cross-country possibilities extending to Styria. Popular destinations include the Tauern Tunnel or the Schladminger Tauern.
Please be mindful of the Mauterndorf airfield.
