Description

Speiereck, located in St. Michael im Lungau, Austria, offers a paragliding experience with an elevation of 2087 meters and a height difference of 1070 meters. This site is relatively less frequented, making it a serene spot for soaring and some cross-country flying. The site record stands at 104.0 km. For more information, visit: [DFC Lungau](http://www.dfc-lungau.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=32&Itemid=76). Speiereck is the main flying mountain in the region. With south and light east winds, pilots can start directly at Peterbauerkreuz. For stronger east winds, a short hike up the ski slope is required. Takeoff Directions: - **South:** The main takeoff area is spacious, clear, and suitable for beginners. - **East:** With light east winds, you can still start from the main takeoff. For pure east winds, hike up the ski slope to start. This is also beginner-friendly. - **North/East:** This takeoff is only for experienced pilots, and local advice should be heeded. Access: - **Summer:** Access is only possible with DFC-Lungau club vehicles. Typically, rides are available on Saturdays and Sundays, meeting around 10:00 - 11:00 AM at the Fliegerhütte in St. Martin. Coordination with club members is necessary during weekdays. - **Alternative:** You can take the gondola from Mauterndorf to Großeck and hike approximately 1 hour to the takeoff. Check the operating times of Bergbahnen Lungau. - **Winter:** Access is easier with the chairlift from St. Martin to Speiereck. Paragliders can either walk 20 minutes to the official takeoff or take a 5-minute downhill walk and then the 4-seater chairlift to the summit. Hang gliders are transported to the takeoff by SkiDoo; inform the base station. Thermal conditions are favorable year-round, with the best flying season from March to June. Despite its excellent conditions, Speiereck is not overly crowded. For more details, visit: [DFC Lungau](http://www.dfc-lungau.com). Thermals are usable from the morning, with cross-country possibilities extending into Styria. Popular destinations include the Tauerntunnel and Schladminger Tauern. Please be mindful of the Mauterndorf airfield.
