Description
Nandi Hills, located 70 kilometers north of Bangalore, India, is a popular paragliding site known for its strong and frequent thermals, making it ideal for thermal flying and cross-country (XC) potential. The flying season runs from October to May, and the site is suitable for pilots with a P2 certification or P1 pilots accompanied by an instructor.
The site offers multiple launch points:
- **North (Nandi-1)**: Accessible by road.
- **North-west (Nandi-2)**: Requires a 40-minute hike from curve 20.
- **South-east (Nandi-1)**: Accessible by road.
- **South (Nandi-1)**: Accessible by road.
The south launch is a cliff launch with a rocky surface, while the southeast launch is a large grassy slope. The southwest launch is tight, and the northeast launch is grassy with rocky outcrops. The northwest launch is located on an adjoining hill called Nandi-2, featuring a vast grassy, gentle slope suitable for top landing.
Landing areas are abundant with open fields around the hills, but pilots must be cautious of power lines and fences. Designated landing zones (LZ) are available to facilitate easy retrieval. The primary LZ coordinates are 13° 21.163' North, 77° 41.288' East, with an elevation of 962 meters above sea level.
Hazards to be aware of include compression in strong winds, strong ventures between the hills, and power lines. Pilots should avoid landing in fields with crops.
To reach Nandi Hills, you can hire a car or taxi from Bangalore, which is well-connected by bus, rail, and air. Government buses also connect Nandi Hills from the Bangalore bus station, and trains are available to Nandi railway station, from where you can take an autorickshaw to the hills.
