Description
Monte Gallinola, located in the southern part of the Matese mountains, offers one of the most beautiful and evocative flying experiences in Central Italy. The takeoff is at an altitude of 1,700 meters, with a steep ridge that drops down to a plain at 1,000 meters. This site is regularly used and provides good soaring conditions with some potential for cross-country flights.
The takeoff can be reached via an asphalt road passing through Guardiaregia or by taking the provincial road left of the Campitello Matese plain. The recommended flying season is from spring to summer.
The official landing zone is near Lake Matese. To get there, drive along the road from the lake up the mountain for about 1 km. Park on the left side of a meadow before a sharp right turn. The last 100 meters must be covered on foot. Hang gliders can drive a bit further to unload but cannot park there.
During the central hours of the day, the takeoff can be quite technical due to strong thermals rising up the steep slope. Pilots can easily soar over the entire Matese Park, reaching Pietraroja in the province of Benevento and Piedimonte Matese in the province of Caserta, offering a landscape reminiscent of the Dolomites, ideal for cross-country flights.
