Best Conditions
Description
Campochiaro, located at an altitude of 1070 meters above sea level with a height difference of 490 meters, is a frequently used paragliding site in Italy. Known for its good soaring and thermalling conditions, it also offers opportunities for cross-country (XC) flights. Although there is no official landing zone, there are many landing options available.
The takeoff area is simple but not very spacious, and its north-facing orientation makes it suitable for cross-country flights only a few times a year. The unique orography of the Matese mountains allows for free flight even with winds from the northern quadrants. The takeoff at Campochiaro is often used for tasks in competitions like CRIC and MAG, enabling both mountain flights along the scenic northern slopes of Monte Miletto (2050 meters) and Gallinola (1923 meters), as well as fantastic plains crossings with XC possibilities exceeding 100 km in both West-Northwest and Southeast directions.
The grassy takeoff area allows for the simultaneous launch of two or three gliders. The landing area is a very large meadow, practically obstacle-free, making it an excellent site for beginners in cross-country flying. There are also numerous landing possibilities throughout the valley.

The site is located 15 km from Campobasso. The lower takeoff at 1100 meters is reachable in 5 minutes from the landing area via an asphalt road. For the higher takeoff at 1400 meters, the road is gravel, useful when conditions are weak. There are no problems with landings, as there is an immense plain at 550 meters altitude.
The Matese mountains, with Monte Miletto being the highest at 2050 meters, also host the Campitello Matese ski resort. With some altitude, you can admire the Matese lake (south side), another beautiful flying spot with southern winds. From Campochiaro, you can easily reach a 10 km ridge, and after crossing a small valley, the ridge continues for another 20 km up to Isernia. Flights are mostly thermal, often reaching altitudes above 2000 meters, and in the late afternoon until sunset, it offers beautiful restitution flights.
Best conditions are with north winds, and the site is flyable year-round.
