Description

Located in California, USA, this paragliding site offers a takeoff altitude of 1075 meters with a height difference of 660 meters. It is a regularly used site, suitable for both paragliding (PG) and hang gliding (HG). The site works best with wind directions from the southwest to southeast. Access to the launch site involves a 45-minute drive, and a high-clearance vehicle is recommended due to the rough terrain. Thermal soaring and cross-country (XC) flights are possible here, but pilots should be aware of airspace restrictions and watch for helicopters crossing May Canyon. The Sylmar Flight Park, which serves as the landing zone, is located north of Los Angeles off the 210 freeway in the city of Sylmar. The park is open daily from 8 AM until dusk. Kagel Mountain, the launch site, is situated in the Angeles National Forest. Access to the launch site requires contacting a current SHGA member, and a four-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended. Most pilots meet at the Flight Park and carpool to the launch site. The launch altitude is approximately 3,540 feet MSL (Mean Sea Level), providing ample altitude for a rewarding flight. Sylmar is known for its strong thermals and turbulence, making it an exciting inland desert flying site. Wind direction typically shifts from the south during the day to the north near sunset. The SHGA landing zone is easily reachable from the launch site, and several streamers are placed in the LZ for guidance. Pilots must have a current USHPA membership and demonstrate an understanding of SHGA rules, guidelines, site dangers, and landing patterns. Intermediate-rated pilots (H/P-3) or higher are allowed to fly, while novice pilots (H-2/P-2) may fly under direct supervision or with sign-off from a local SHGA designated instructor. For more information, visit the Sylmar Hang Gliding Association website: https://shga.com/ Kagel Mountain is known for its complex site dangers, including deceptive launches, power lines, rotor zones, and strong thermals. Pilots should be cautious of restricted airspace, particularly the helicopter corridor in May Canyon. Additionally, air traffic from nearby airports and rifle ranges pose significant hazards. The site is soarable year-round, with the best flying conditions typically occurring in October and April. The site is part of a south-facing mountain range, primarily offering thermal flying reinforced by ridge lift.
