The best spots of Paragliding | Soboba

Soboba 1, CA

Paragliding map of
Optimal Wind Direction
SSW SW WSW W

Optimal Speed (mph)

Soboba Flight Park in California is a premier paragliding destination with consistently good weather for over 300 days a year, making it ideal for thermalling and soaring. The best conditions are typically an 11-15 mph south-west wind, about 3-4 hours before sunset, with sunny skies. The park offers a range of amenities including toilets, showers, camping facilities, and kitchen facilities. For a small fee, you can get an ATV ride to the 650ft launch site, or you can hike to various launch sites at different heights: 100ft (training site), 250ft, 500ft, 650ft (main launch site), 800ft (popular for speed wing launches), 1000ft, and 1200ft. For more information, visit: - [Wilder Adventures](https://www.wilderadventures.com/launch/908/soboba-san-jacinto) - [Soboba Paragliding](https://www.sobobaparagliding.com/) - [Expanding Knowledge](https://www.expandingknowledge.com/Jerome/PG/Site/Soboba/Main.htm) Cross-country flying is also popular here. Before you go, familiarize yourself with the airspace, especially the California 3D overlay for classes B/C/D and restricted military airspace. Good altitude and convergence flying over the valley can be explored further on [Paragliding Forum](https://www.paraglidingforum.com/modules.php?name=leonardo&op=show_flight&flightID=143616). Soboba stands out due to its unique combination of a mountain site with quick access to launch points. This is particularly beneficial for new pilots, as it significantly reduces training time. The park offers rides to launch 7 days a week and does not require wind to fly, providing over 320 flyable days per year. For those aiming to earn their P2 paragliding rating, Soboba offers the perfect setup with multiple flights per day from high altitudes, allowing students to start learning to soar from their very first flight. The park also offers speed flying and paramotor training in addition to paragliding. The takeoff area is well-maintained, with weeds mowed down and enough space to accommodate several wings. Winchester Bowl, CA

Paragliding map of
Optimal Wind Direction
SSW SW WSW W WNW

Optimal Speed (mph)

Located in California, USA, this paragliding site offers an elevation of 530-580 meters with a height difference of 50 meters. It is regularly used for soaring and some thermalling, making it a decent spot for intermediate pilots. The site features multiple takeoff options, including launches facing West, East, and North. There are two main launches: one at the top, which is a small southwest-facing launch, and another about 30-40 meters down, which is more south-facing and slightly larger. It takes approximately 20 minutes to walk from the base to the top. Weather conditions can be quite strong in the middle of the afternoon, typical of Southern California. Be cautious of the airport to the east of the ridge to avoid flying too high. Winchester Bowl is often used as a backup site when Soboba's conditions are too weak for soaring. However, space is limited, and more than 4-5 pilots in the air can feel crowded unless it's a particularly lifty day. Pilots have noted that the wind at this site tends to be stronger than forecasted. For example, a forecasted 8-10 mph west wind turned out to be a sustained 12-15 mph from the south. The lower launch is recommended for south winds due to its lighter and more consistent conditions. Optimal Wind Direction
SSW SW WSW W

Optimal Speed (mph)

Located in California, USA, this paragliding site offers a launch elevation of 1133 meters with a height difference of 660 meters. The site is accessible by car, allowing for a convenient drive-up to the top launch area. It is not frequently used, making it a quieter spot for those looking to avoid crowded locations. The site is suitable for thermalling and some cross-country (XC) flights. Paragliding pilots can launch from the top flat area or use the cleared slope in front of it, although the vegetation tends to regrow quickly. Hang gliding pilots, on the other hand, will find a preferable launch spot by heading to the right (about 100 feet) and walking to the end of a small spine (about 50 feet). The site has recorded flights up to 168.9 km, although another record shows a shorter distance of 8.6 km.
