The Fronalpstock near Mollis, Switzerland, offers a medium-easy paragliding experience with a takeoff altitude of 1344 meters. Be cautious as there are two locations named 'Fronalpstock'; this one is approximately 40 km ENE from the other. The main takeoff spot is a moderately steep meadow, easily accessible with a short 5-minute walk from the nearby restaurant.
This site is regularly used for soaring and cross-country flights. However, it is crucial to adhere to specific rules due to its proximity to the military airfield in Mollis. During military operations, flying is prohibited, and special instructions at the takeoff and landing zones must be followed. The exact details are provided on-site.
The military airfield is also used by civilian aviation year-round. Therefore, it is essential to follow the designated landing approach and maintain an altitude of 900 meters above sea level or lower.
Transportation to the takeoff site is available via the Mollis-Fronalp bus for groups of four or more, operated by Maxi Taxi (T. Goldschmid, E. Thoma) at Tel. 079 693 49 49.
With strong NW winds or thermals, it is possible to safely cross the high-voltage power lines in front of Fronalpstock, making it within reach for paragliders. However, cross-country flights towards the south (Linthal or Elm) are challenging, while some flights eastwards and towards the Churfirsten have been successfully completed. When flying north, be mindful of the strong valley winds.
Due to concerns from both civilian and military airfield management, paragliding within the 5km zone of the Mollis airfield may face restrictions. Overcrowding by large paragliding schools has led to safety issues for incoming and outgoing pilots. Additionally, the parking area has been overwhelmed by paragliders' vehicles, causing inconvenience to other users.
The farmer at the landing site has reported chaotic conditions, including unauthorized use of the meadow for sunbathing and careless behavior in high grass. It is imperative to respect the height limit of 900 meters during the approach and avoid flying over the airfield. Follow the rules strictly: fly close to the terrain after passing the high-voltage mast, descend to the landing site, and land using a left turn in valley wind conditions. Do not practice ground handling at the landing site.
