Description
The Fronalpstock site, located above Mollis-Näfels in Switzerland, offers a medium-easy paragliding experience with an elevation range of 1340-1433 meters. This site is regularly used for soaring and cross-country flights, although it is not among the most popular destinations.
Important: There are two locations named 'Fronalpstock.' The other one is approximately 40 km ENE from here. This site is the main launch area in winter, with summer launches taking place below the road.
Region: Mollis, Switzerland. The site record is 66.2 km.
Hazards: Be aware of the CTR during military flight operations, which imposes a flight ban. Specific instructions at the launch and landing sites must be followed. Detailed information is provided on-site.
Info: The Mollis military airfield is used year-round by civilian aviation. Therefore, it is crucial to adhere to the designated landing approach and maintain an overflight altitude of 900 meters above sea level or lower.
Transport: A bus service from Mollis to Fronalp is available for groups of four or more through Maxi Taxi (T. Goldschmid, E. Thoma) at Tel. 079 693 49 49.
Potential: With sufficient NW wind or thermals, the high-voltage power lines in front of Fronalpstock can be safely crossed, making the site accessible.
Launch Site:
- Orientation: NW
- Difficulty: Medium
- Elevation: 1340 m
- Coordinates: 9.09105322, 47.07187434
- Walking Time: 5 minutes from the restaurant towards Mullerenberg
- The launch site is a moderately steep meadow.
Special Notes: Taxi service is available from the landing site in Mollis. Private vehicles are not allowed to access the launch site, but hang glider pilots can transport their equipment.
Flight:
- With strong NW wind or thermals, the high-voltage power lines can be safely crossed.
- Cross-country flights towards the south (Linthal or Elm) are challenging.
- Some cross-country flights eastwards and towards the Churfirsten have been achieved.
- Strong valley winds must be considered when flying northwards.
Difficulty:
- The civilian and military airfield management has concerns about paragliding operations within the airfield's flight zone. Permission for paragliding within the 5 km zone may not always be granted due to safety concerns.
- The parking area has been overcrowded by paragliders, causing issues for other users.
- The farmer at the landing site has reported chaotic conditions, including unauthorized activities and damage to the meadow.
Rules:
- Maintain the altitude limit of 900 meters during the approach.
- Do not overfly the airfield.
- Follow the designated flight path to avoid conflicts with air traffic.
- No ground handling at the landing site.
