Description
The paragliding site at Filzbach, Switzerland, offers a medium-difficult flying experience. The launch site is situated at an elevation of 673 meters and is occasionally used for soaring and some cross-country flights. The site record is 6.7 km.
The launch area can be challenging due to shifting winds and turbulence in the first 200 meters towards NNW. It's crucial to be cautious as the wind between Niederurnen and Ziegelbrücke can be quite strong, requiring good control of the accelerator.
This site is ideal for afternoon flights in spring and summer. In winter, it's suitable only for very experienced pilots. The landowners prohibit top landing unless there's snow cover.
To reach the site, take the Glarnerbus from Näfels-Mollis station and get off at Kappelenstutz. Follow the asphalt road for about 150 meters towards SSE, then take the path towards NE for about 700 meters through the forest to the launch site ('Walsaweg'). Alternatively, drive to the parking area below the launch site and walk up a steep path for about 5 minutes, following the yellow fiberglass markers.
The ideal wind directions are NW, N, and valley wind. The site offers the potential for hours of soaring between 700 meters and 1600 meters, with beautiful views of Walensee, the Prealps, and the Säntis massif from around 1200 meters. At 1600 meters (preferably 1700 meters), you can cross to Fronalp. Another option is to fly past Nüenchamm to Schijenstock and over Fronalpstock. Durschlegi is reachable at 1600 meters with valley wind, but not with north wind.
The launch site is a medium-steep short meadow, located at 660 meters elevation. It is primarily used by experienced pilots due to the challenging conditions with shifting winds and turbulence. The best time to fly is in the afternoon, and it's important to be familiar with using the accelerator due to the strong winds in the valley.
