Conditions Optimales
Description
At an altitude of approximately 1850 meters, this paragliding site offers a medium difficulty level. The site is primarily used as a reference point for cross-country (XC) flights, with no flight logs found for this specific location. It is also a picturesque spot suitable for bivouac camping.
Access to the take-off point involves a 30-minute walk. From Lungern, take the cable car and gondola to Schoenbuel. Follow the marked hiking trail to the ridge between Wilerhorn and Hoech Gumme, then descend to the saddle north of Wilerhorn and ascend to the take-off area. The take-off area is a steep, narrow meadow.
Take-off direction ranges from 22.5° to 67.5°. The take-off window is oriented to the northeast and is of medium difficulty. The elevation at the take-off point is 1870 meters, and it is accessible via a cable car.
Coordinates for the take-off point are 8.09987877, 46.77735693.
Lungern is located in the upper part of the canton of Obwalden at 750 meters above sea level, near the Lungernsee and at the foot of the Brünig Pass. It is the highest village in the Sarneraatal, situated in a basin open only to the north and surrounded by steep, wooded slopes and cliffs on other sides.
The area is a good starting point for beautiful cross-country flights and offers take-off opportunities in all four cardinal directions. However, stronger westerly winds require a short walk.
The cable car and chairlift quickly transport skiers and paragliders to the mountain station, and the terrain usually allows for thermal flights even in winter. Please observe no-fly zones.
The thermal conditions here often result in flights that exceed the initial 1300 meters of altitude gain. If you can fly towards Interlaken, it becomes an exhilarating experience.
During military operations, no flights to the west are allowed. Pay attention to CTR Meiringen. The take-off area is within the LS-D6 (Axalp) danger zone, an area with military shooting exercises (3500/1850m) from January 1 to May 31 and October 1 to December 31, Monday to Friday from 8:45 to 16:30. Overflights must be reported on 135.475 MHz (flight path, altitude).
MIL CTR Meiringen operates Monday to Friday from 7:30 to 12:05 and 13:15 to 17:05, with an upper limit of FL 130, airspace class D MIL (3950/GND). Any night flights are listed in the NOTAM. Check KOSIF and NOTAM (PDF VFR Bulletin) for more details.
When flying towards Giswil or Sarnen, you first enter TMA 4 of Buochs (3950/1800m). If you continue towards Sarnersee, you enter TMA 2 (3950/700m).
Be cautious of multiple telephone cables at the smaller landing site near the lake. This site is shielded by trees and houses on the mountain side, and a telephone line runs diagonally across the site. If you are aware of it, it's not a problem, but it can be easily overlooked from the air. This site is suitable for strong valley winds.
The larger, longer landing site is simple and obstacle-free, also suitable for strong mountain winds. Watch for rotors behind the trees during valley winds. The windsock is frayed and not easily visible, so inspect it beforehand.
Cable considerations: Cable car cables should be visible. Pay special attention to power/telephone cables, especially at the landing site near the lake. If flying very low over the trees along the slope, you may encounter additional cables, such as near the waterfall (see the air obstacle map, Brünig sheet).
This is a Föhn area. During strong thermals, it is possible to fly with weak Föhn if the thermals lift the Föhn high enough.
Soaring conditions: With good thermals, you can fly cross-country in all directions. Northwards to Stanserhorn and Pilatus, southwards to Hasliberg, and westwards to Interlaken. In Bise conditions (north take-off direction), you can comfortably soar in Bise.
