Description

From the top station of the chairlift, walk between the chairlift and the telephone line towards the valley. After about 100 meters, the telephone line veers north (left), revealing an ideal launch site for northern to eastern directions. This site is occasionally used and offers some potential for cross-country flights. For more information, visit [Airtandem](http://www.airtandem.ch/ff/atff003.html). The launch area is comfortable, situated on an alpine meadow. It is a beautiful winter launch site for ski starts. The launch directions are North, Northeast, and South. To get there, drive to Sarnen, head towards Brünig and Lungern. At the village exit (traffic light), turn right towards Obsee to the cable car parking lot. From there, take the cable car in two sections to Schönbüel. The landing site is at Lungern Obsee near the parking lot or on a meadow by the lake (windsock). The launch site is right next to the top station. The cozy mountain restaurant is worth a visit to enjoy the stunning panoramic views of Central Switzerland. With good thermals, you can fly in all directions: north towards Stanserhorn and Pilatus, south towards Hasliberg, and west towards Interlaken. For more details on the cable car, visit [Panoramawelt](http://www.panoramawelt.ch/). Lungern is located in the highest part of the canton of Obwalden at 750 meters above sea level, by the lake of the same name and at the foot of the Brünig Pass. It is the highest village in the Sarneraatal, situated in a basin open only to the north and surrounded by steep, wooded slopes and cliffs on the other sides. The area is a good starting point for beautiful cross-country flights and offers launch options in all four cardinal directions. However, stronger westerly winds require a short walk. The cable car and chairlift quickly bring skiers and paragliders to the top station, and the terrain usually allows for thermal flights even in winter. Please observe no-fly zones. The nearly 1300 meters of altitude can be deceiving, as the thermals here often contribute to significantly longer flights. If you can fly towards Interlaken, it gets really exciting. During military operations, no flights to the west! Pay attention to CTR Meiringen. The launch site is in the danger area LS-D6 (Axalp), an area with military shooting (3500/1850m) from January 1 to May 31 and October 1 to December 31, Monday to Friday from 8:45 to 16:30. Overflights must be reported on 135.475 MHz (flight path, altitude). MIL CTR Meiringen operates Monday to Friday from 7:30 to 12:05 and 13:15 to 17:05. Upper limit FL 130, airspace class D MIL (3950/GND). Possible night flights are listed in NOTAM. Check KOSIF and NOTAM (PDF VFR Bulletin). When flying towards Giswil and Sarnen, you first enter TMA 4 of Buochs (3950/1800m). If you continue to Sarnersee, you enter TMA 2 (3950/700m). Be cautious of multiple telephone cables at the smaller landing site near the lake. This site is shielded by trees and houses on the mountain side (rotors in strong winds) and a telephone line runs diagonally over the site on the valley side. If you know it, it's no problem, but it can be easily overlooked from the air. This site is suitable for strong valley winds. Since the site is next to the valley station, take a look! The larger, longer landing site is simple and obstacle-free. It is also suitable for strong mountain winds. Watch for rotors behind the trees in valley winds. The windsock is frayed and hard to see. Take a look! Cable visibility: Railway cables should be visible. Pay special attention to power/telephone cables, especially at the landing site by the lake. Near the waterfall, additional cables can be seen if flying very low over the trees on the slope (see obstacle map, Brünig sheet). Foehn area! In strong thermals, it is possible to fly with weak foehn if the thermals lift the foehn high enough. Soaring conditions: With good thermals, you can fly in all directions: north towards Stanserhorn and Pilatus, south towards Hasliberg, and west towards Interlaken. In Bise (north wind), you can comfortably soar. Orientation: 157.5° - 202.5° Difficulty: Easy Height: 2000 m Cable car: Yes Walking time: 2 min Beautiful alpine meadow. Beautiful winter launch site for ski starts. Launch directions are North, Northeast, and South. Remarks: The cozy mountain restaurant at Schönbüel is worth a visit for the stunning panoramic views. The launch site is right next to the top station. Beautiful cross-country flights with good thermals towards Pilatus, Interlaken, or Haslital. The area is very popular as a ski resort in winter. In Lungern by the lake, there is a campsite and a family-friendly lakeside bath.
