Description
The paragliding site at Vorderer Gummen, located near Vierwaldstaetter Lake in Switzerland, offers an elevation of 1600 meters and is considered easy to moderate in difficulty. This site is regularly used for soaring, with good potential for cross-country (XC) flights. Pilots often launch towards the north and find thermals south of the ridge.
The launch area is a steep meadow near the viewpoint Vorderer Gummen, with fir trees below the starting meadow and a windsock for wind direction indication. The region provides stunning views of Stanserhorn, Haldigrat, Walenstöcke, and Titlis, and is easily accessible. Gummen, like Büelen, is a reliable spot even in challenging wind conditions, but it is higher and allows early entry into Büelen thermals. It is also a good starting point for short valley flights or XC flights towards Brünig.
Due to the nearby controlled airspace (CTR) to the north, caution is advised. However, pilots are rewarded with ever-changing views and a cozy flying area.
Access options include arriving via Stans and Stanserhorn or from Dallenwil. From Gummen, you can continue to Büelen, where thermals typically start earlier. From there, you can ascend and fly via Brändlen to Haldigrat or head directly towards Brünig.
There are no significant difficulties, but pilots should be able to distinguish between windward and leeward sides and be vigilant for cables and wires.
The entire area is a family and children's paradise, featuring attractions like a petting zoo and a summer toboggan run. While the kids are entertained, parents can enjoy a quick flight without much notice.
For transportation, take the Dallenwil-Wirzweli aerial cableway. From Dallenwil, take the cableway to Wirzweli, then walk to the Gummenbahn (about 10 minutes) and take it to the summit. The launch site is a steep meadow.
