Description

This paragliding site near Lake Lucerne in Switzerland is frequently used and occasionally offers excellent cross-country (XC) opportunities. Top landing is possible here. The main launch area is located 5 minutes east of the Gummenbahn mountain station, on a moderately steep to steep cow pasture on the southeast side of the Gummengrat. The Engelberg Valley serves as a real alternative to the flying areas in the Allgäu and the central Alps. The drive from southern Germany takes just 2-3 hours. Depending on the wind direction, pilots have access to four launch sites. The only drawback of the area becomes apparent when considering the landing zones. The main landing zone for paragliders at the valley station of the cable car is on a slope and often thermally active. With a bit of practice and some experience, this is manageable and saves a long walk from the landing zone to the cable car. Hang gliders will have their own stories to tell about this. Without a car or shuttle service, the landing zone is not exactly 'close and good,' but it is pleasantly large. If the paraglider landing zone at the Schützenhaus is active, you can share the long walk to the mountain cable car with the hang gliders and land next to their landing zone. This landing option is less stressful compared to slope landings. However, caution is advised if the flag at the Schützenhaus is flying, as the Swiss are known for their sharp shooting! The area offers flights with views of Stanserhorn, Haldigrat, Walenstöcke, and Titlis and is quickly accessible. The Gummen, like Büelen, is a good tip even in adverse wind conditions, but it is higher and allows early entry into Büelen thermals. It is also considered a good starting point for small valley flights or XC towards Brünig. Due to the nearby controlled airspace (CTR) to the north, caution is advised. However, you will be rewarded with ever-changing views and a cozy flying area. There are many possibilities: - Approach via Stans and Stanserhorn or from Dallenwil. - Continue to Büelen (Gummen usually supports earlier). - Climb there and fly via Brändlen to Haldigrat, or head straight towards Brünig. Difficulty: No real difficulties, but you should be able to distinguish between windward and leeward sides and keep an eye out for cables and ropes. The entire area is a paradise for families and children, offering everything from petting zoos to summer toboggan runs. While the kids are entertained, parents can enjoy a quick flight without much notice. For more information, visit [Wirzweli](http://www.wirzweli.ch/). Launch Site: - Orientation: SE, S - Difficulty: Medium - Elevation: 1580 m - Cable Car: Yes - Coordinates: 8.365202664936, 46.902416085943 - Walking Time: 15 min From Dallenwil, take the cable car to Wirzweli. From there, walk to the Gummenbahn (about 10 minutes) and take it to the summit. The launch site is a steep meadow.
