Best Conditions
Description
Thurle Down/Streatley Warren South (Queens/Jacks) is a regularly used paragliding site in the UK, known for its good soaring conditions. The site is open all year round and can handle winds from the South to South-East directions. It offers surprisingly good lift in wind speeds of 10-15 mph, although it is not recommended for low airtime pilots when conditions are unstable or winds exceed 12 mph. The trees along the top of the hill can pose a hazard if blown back into.
The site features two main areas: Queens (the main ridge) and Jacks (the west side of the hill). If cattle are present in Queens, pilots should use Jacks. Access is through a gate to the east of the car park by the road. It is important to shut all gates and park considerately in the Ridgeway car park. Do not climb fences, but the small electric cable near the bottom can be stepped over.
The site is mapped on Ordnance Survey Map: Explorer 170 SU 566816. The best wind direction for flying is South-South-East. The height above sea level is 510 ft, with a top-to-bottom height of 150 ft. The best height gain recorded is 600 ft.
The required pilot experience level varies depending on conditions, but generally ranges from low to medium. However, very experienced pilots with 150+ hours are also recommended for this site.
