Description
Schafberg (1750m) in St. Wolfgang/Wolfgangsee, Austria, offers a unique paragliding experience. The take-off directions are South, South-East, and South-West. You can reach the launch site either by taking the Schafbergbahn railway or by hiking. The landing zone is located on the opposite shore of the lake in the village of Abersee.
To get to the launch site, you can take a ferry from Abersee to St. Wolfgang and then proceed to the Schafbergbahnhof. The launch area is a grassy slope situated about 5 minutes west of the mountain station, with good take-off conditions for SSO winds. Be cautious of potential wind rotors or misleading thermal updrafts before launching. In the afternoon, East-Northeast winds can sometimes make launching impossible.
The landing field in Abersee-Reith is conveniently located by the lakeshore. Ensure you maintain a minimum altitude of 350 meters over the lake to safely cross, as downdrafts can be tricky.
For those who prefer hiking, the starting point is in St. Gilgen Winkl. The well-marked trail to the summit and launch sites takes about 2-3.5 hours, with the final stretch exposed to direct sunlight. There are also good landing spots near the starting point.
Soaring conditions are excellent when the wind is from the South-East to South-West. However, note that landing in Abersee is challenging, and it is often better to land in St. Wolfgang/Ried.
