Description
Located in Nevada, USA, approximately 8 miles north of Reno, this paragliding site offers a variety of takeoff options with an elevation ranging from 2470 to 2507 meters and a height difference of approximately 990 meters. The site is occasionally used and is suitable for thermalling and some cross-country (XC) flying. Speedflying is also possible, particularly on the west-oriented side.
There are multiple takeoff points: 200 meters to the west, there's a north-facing takeoff, and 1.5 kilometers to the north-northwest, there's an optional northeast-facing takeoff. Landing options are plentiful in the valley, especially near the road. The site is unregulated, but an intermediate pilot rating (H3) is recommended.
The region is known for its strong thermals and high-altitude mountain flying. The launch directions include north, northeast, and east, with possible southeast options. The site is accessible during spring, summer, and fall, and even in winter if snow hasn't blocked the launches. The launch elevation is around 8,200 feet, while the landing zone (LZ) elevation is approximately 5,100 feet.
The launch areas include a bowl launch, which is a steep, grassy slope with some bushes, and a tower launch, which is a steep slope with loose dirt and rocks. The setup area behind the bowl launch is unlimited and grassy, while the tower launch has a small, rocky dirt area.
Access to the launch sites is via a semi-maintained dirt road, requiring a 30-40 minute drive with a vehicle that has good clearance. The area is surrounded by controlled airspace, so it's important to familiarize yourself with airspace restrictions.
