Peavine Mountain, located 8 miles north of Reno, NV, offers a unique paragliding experience. The launch elevation is approximately 8,200 feet, with a height difference of around 990 meters. The landing zone (LZ) elevation is about 5,100 feet. This site is rarely used and is recommended for intermediate (H3) and advanced (H4) pilots due to its challenging conditions. The launch directions are primarily North, Northeast, and East, with some potential for Southeast. The site is accessible in Spring, Summer, and Fall, and even in Winter if snow hasn't blocked the launches. The bowl launch features a steep, grassy slope with some bushes, while the tower launch has a steep slope with loose dirt and rocks. High density altitudes in the summer often exceed 10,000 feet. The landing area is high desert terrain, and there isn't a designated LZ due to development covering the old ones. Pilots must be prepared to land wherever they can. The setup area is unlimited grassy space behind the bowl launch and a small rocky, dirt area at the tower launch. Controlled airspace surrounds the site, so it's crucial to familiarize yourself with airspace restrictions by consulting an area sectional. Access to the launch is via a semi-maintained dirt road, requiring a 30-40 minute turnaround. A 2WD vehicle with good clearance is sufficient. Peavine Mountain is known for strong thermals and excellent high-altitude mountain flying and cross-country (XC) opportunities. However, pilots should be cautious of dust devils at launch and in the valley. For more information, you can visit [Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association]( or check the [weather forecast](
