Description

Hohen Bogen, Germany Elevation: 1036 m, Height Difference: 525 m, Medium-Difficult This site is frequently used and offers excellent cross-country flying opportunities. The site record is an impressive 281.3 km. Important Notices: Flying operations are only recommended for experienced pilots due to the landing area at the valley station being suitable only as an emergency landing spot. The area is heavily forested, requiring careful navigation. The new launch site, located on the ski slope west of the mountain station, provides a slightly greater height difference, making it possible to reach the designated landing area for hang gliders. However, if you do not find thermals immediately, it is advised to head directly to the hang glider landing area. Near the Berggasthof Schönblick, the terrain drops off to the southeast, which can tempt pilots to stray from the slope. This area often experiences lee turbulence and significant sink, making it difficult to reach a safe landing spot. On the south side of the mountain, the forest extends far out. It is recommended to only fly away from the launch site with at least 500 meters of altitude gain, as strong sink and lee turbulence can occur depending on wind and thermal conditions. Launch permission is only granted after a briefing from an experienced club member. Wind Information: Phone: 09947/2452 The view from Hohen Bogen extends over the Bavarian Forest into Bohemia. Notable landmarks include the towers on the peaks, which are an old listening station and a television transmitter. Due to restrictions, no spruce trees can be felled near the mountain station of the chairlift to create a safer launch site. The proximity of the cable car makes launching too risky, so the launch sites are located in the ski run clearings. Paraglider pilots must carry their gear 70 meters down to the launch hut in the main ski run clearing. If you cannot make it to the main landing area, which is 1.4 km away, you must land steeply uphill in the ski run clearing. The valley station has numerous tourist facilities, and further development is ongoing. A map at the valley station shows the locations of the two launch sites. Hang gliders must be carried to the Schönblick mountain hut, which is almost 100 meters downhill. The towers on Hohen Bogen are significant landmarks. The two listening stations on the 1079 m high Schwarzriegel were originally built for East German espionage but are now defunct. A television transmitter stands on the 976 m high Burgstall. Landing here is risky due to trees, parked cars, playground equipment, and tailwinds. It is crucial to fly away from the mountain in time to avoid sinking. Hang gliders can reach the landing area even in stronger headwinds. Regardless of the chosen launch site, it will be in a ski run clearing. The Schönblick tow lift has long been decommissioned and dismantled, causing the clearing to become increasingly overgrown, making launches more challenging. Hang gliders have become rare at Hohen Bogen. When the wind comes from the front, i.e., from the northeast, the launch is straightforward, and you will be lifted over the peaks immediately. Be cautious of side winds, as the turbulence can be challenging for less experienced pilots. The chairlift takes you 400 meters up to the summit. If you are already exhausted or want to treat your retrieval crew, you can stop at the mountain inn. For non-flyers, there are numerous hiking opportunities. From the mid-station of the Hohen Bogen Bahn, you can also take a summer toboggan run back down the mountain.
