Engelberg, Switzerland, offers an exceptional paragliding experience with its main launch site at Brunni, easily accessible via cable car. The launch site is situated at an altitude of 1860 meters and is oriented towards the southwest and west, making it ideal for cross-country flights and scenic soaring. The site is frequently used and provides reliable thermals, often better than expected due to its favorable microclimate. To reach the launch site, take the cable car from Engelberg to Ristis, followed by a chairlift to Brunnihütte. The launch area is a steep meadow located just west of Brunnihütte. The main landing zone is in the town of Engelberg, with an additional landing area near the local paragliding school next to the campsite. The landscape is stunning but requires caution due to controlled airspace (CTR) and cables in the Engelberg Valley. The launch site is 150 meters from Brunnihütte and can be reached in about 5 minutes on foot. The Brunni area is known for its reliable thermals and is often flyable even when other locations are not. The region is perfect for small cross-country flights, especially with light southwest to west winds. However, it is not recommended to fly during Föhn or strong north winds. The protected location often allows for flying when other areas are grounded. On sunny days, strong northwest to west winds can develop in the main valley, and pilots should be cautious of potential Föhn conditions. For cross-country flights, starting from Fürenalp or Brunni is advantageous, with good thermals even in stable summer conditions. The steep launch site is 150 meters from the hut. From Brunni, pilots have various options, including simple flights to Engelberg, thermal flights to Haldigrat, enjoyable flights to Grafenort, and other small cross-country flights in the Engelberg Valley with up to 2050 meters of altitude difference. Be aware of cables in the valley. Landing on Ochsenmatte (summer) and Klostermatte (winter) can be challenging due to rapidly changing wind systems and potential rotor effects behind buildings.
