Description
East Hill is a paragliding site with an elevation of 228 meters. It is managed by the Devon & Somerset Condors club. The site is suitable for cross-country (XC) flights, although no flight logs are available. The wind direction for optimal flying is from the west.
For more details, visit the club's website: [Devon & Somerset Condors](http://www.dscondors.co.uk/).
Directions:
From Honiton, take the A375 towards Sidmouth. After 2.2 miles, turn right onto the B3174 towards Ottery St Mary just before the 'Hare & Hounds' pub. Before the road descends steeply through the woods, turn left and continue straight for approximately 3 miles until you reach a T-junction with a wooded car park. Park here; the take-off area is the grassy space just over the hedge.
Guidelines:
The takeoff is straightforward for both hang gliders (HG) and paragliders (PG). However, PG pilots should be cautious of the trees behind the takeoff area, especially in strong conditions, as it can be turbulent if thermic.
Bottom Landings:
For both HG and PG, the primary bottom landing (B/L1) is the large field directly in front and to the left of the takeoff. Note that the field slopes away, so HG pilots should inspect it before taking off. Avoid flying low over sheep during lambing season and land well clear of them.
For PG pilots, an additional bottom landing (B/L2) is available. It is the field directly in front of the old takeoff, adjacent to the lane. Be cautious of rotor from the large trees and power lines. Walk along the bottom lane south to the next junction leading to the new takeoff. Avoid landing to the right of the lane, as the farmer charges £15 for each landing there.
Top landing is not permitted.
XC Potential:
The site offers excellent XC potential, with several long flights recorded.
Hazards:
Be aware of low-level military flying and aircraft practicing ILS approaches to Exeter Airport, which is to the north of the takeoff. Never fly past the B3174, which is obscured by trees.
