This coastal site, standing at 123 meters, is known for its sensitivity and is exclusively available to members of the Devon & Somerset Condors club. No reciprocal agreements are in place, so only registered members can fly here.
Before flying, it is mandatory to contact Branscombe Airfield (Andy Tremlow at 07808788996). Andy will also notify Dunkeswell Airport and Exeter ATC to ensure they are aware of your activities.
Directions: The site is located approximately 8 miles south of Honiton. From Branscombe village, head west and turn left up the hill just before the Fountain Head pub. Park on the right outside Berry Barton Farm at the top of the hill, ensuring you do not block any entrances and allow space for farm vehicles. Walk along the track next to the campsite, without crossing it. When the track turns sharply left, go through the gate straight ahead and follow the footpath diagonally to your right across the field to the finger post and circle of stones, which marks the take-off area.
Owners: Mark White, Berry Barton Farm, Branscombe, EX12 3BD - 01297 680208
Guidelines: This is a sensitive site. The owners maintain a list of members and vehicle registrations. Ensure you park responsibly and do not attempt to access the site via any route other than the designated track, even if it is muddy. Bring appropriate footwear like wellies. Do not drive along the track or walk through the caravan park.
Take-off: The take-off area is a smooth, rounded cliff suitable for both hang gliding (HG) and paragliding (PG). It offers an easy take-off but requires commitment in light winds.
Top Landing: For hang gliders, the top landing is in the second field behind the take-off area, accessible through a stile. This field can be turbulent in stronger winds. Paragliders can top land at the take-off area, but be cautious of the sharp cliff edge, which can produce significant rotor if your approach is incorrect. There have been several incidents, especially if the wind is coming from the east.
Bottom Landing: Hang gliders should land to the east at Branscombe Mouth for vehicle access. Be mindful of tourists, fishermen, and boats. Avoid landing on the grass in front of the café when it is open to avoid being approached for money. Paragliders can land directly below on the beach, with a footpath leading straight back up the cliff. There is potential for long coastal runs.
Hazards: Be aware of turbulence in the hang glider top landing field and limited beach space at high tide for bottom landing. Avoid flying too close to the cliff face and trees below, as accidents have occurred from pilots attempting to soar too close to and below the cliff edge.
This is a members-only site at the owner's request. Your car registration must be registered with the owners by the club in advance of flying at this site.
