Description

Elevation: 417 m, Height Difference: 80 m / Medium Frequently used, good for soaring in Föhn conditions, limited cross-country potential. Region: Kallmünz, Germany. Flights near this point: 1016. Site record: 101.0 km. More information: https://gsc-ratisbona.de/wp/?page_id=15 The site features an 80m high, 1000m long ridge with excellent soaring conditions during Föhn winds. Thermal connections are relatively common and can be used for cross-country flights. The cliff-like launch area makes it a challenging site. It is frequently used by club members and many guest pilots. Location: Approximately 12 km west of the Bavarian Forest. Offers a beautiful panorama over the rooftops of the "Pearl of the Naab Valley." With some luck and skill, cross-country flights are possible from here. The launch site is next to the summit cross and is only accessible on foot (driving up is prohibited!). During busy times, sorting and hooking in is done at the side. For launching, it's best to lay the glider directly on the edge and inflate it on the steep section. Note: Kallmünz is not suitable for beginners! You must be proficient in reverse launching. The landing area is the Stablwiese at the foot of the hill (a long meadow next to the bike path). Please do NOT use the adjacent field to maintain good relations with the neighbors. Launch Authorization: Currently, no fee is charged! Only members of GSC Ratisbona, members of other paragliding clubs, and members of the German Alpine Club are authorized to launch. Get a briefing before your first flight and adhere to general pre-flight rules. Launches: Launches are only allowed from the area next to the cross. Intermediate landings are prohibited! Parking: Cars must be parked so that the Kallmünz-Eich municipal road remains fully accessible. Please also observe the 30 km/h speed limit on the last stretch from Kallmünz. Ascent: The ascent to the launch site is only allowed on the official path to the castle. Shortcuts are prohibited! Cleanliness: Please help us preserve nature and do not litter. Smokers should take their cigarette butts with them (use pocket ashtrays!). We welcome every guest, but violators will be asked to leave immediately. As a pilot, you are a welcome guest in the Kallmünz market. Please adhere to the flight regulations to ensure smooth and accident-free operations. This is the only way to secure this beautiful flying site for the future. For more information: http://home.arcor.de/ul-minimum/hg-platz/kallmunz.htm For botanists, it's a small paradise; for hikers, a beautiful area; for paragliders, excellent in southeast wind conditions. However, the site is in a protected landscape area, which means there are mandatory regulations for flying, but they are reasonable and not bureaucratic. Detailed information is available on the information board at the landing site. Summit Cross: The space is limited. The launch area along the long ridge is sufficient, but landing requires good planning to hit the small meadow southwest of the road. The area between the road and the Naab is designated as a wetland. For hang gliders, it's doubly challenging, but with the glide ratio of modern equipment, you can reach agricultural fields across the river. The equipment must be carried up the hill, which is likely why you mostly see paragliders flying here. To protect the biotope, paragliders can only be laid out and launched immediately next to the summit cross. Warning for Drivers: The launch requires considerable skill. Reverse launching should be second nature. The 80m ridge faces southeast—a launch direction not available elsewhere. The soaring space is limited due to the steepness of the ridge, but the ridge itself is usable for about 1 km. Cross-country flying strictly with the wind is not possible. A few hundred meters behind the launch site, the ED-R of the Hohenfels military training area begins. Launches are only allowed next to the summit cross. Across the road, there is a large landing area, also suitable for hang gliders. However, the direction is 90 degrees to the optimal wind direction for launching, and high trees cause turbulence. Landing in stronger winds is quite challenging for hang gliders. Soaring until the wind dies down is not an option, as a strong southeast wind can blow well into the night. Kallmünz is beautifully situated at the confluence of the Naab and Vils rivers. A castle ruin stands on a steep Jurassic rock. In the 13th century, the castle was an important stronghold of the Wittelsbach family. And if the wind isn't right? Swimming in the Naab for those who like cold water, canoeing on the Naab and Vils, and roller skating on the bike path towards Burglengenfeld are highly recommended alternatives. So, bring some extra gear. Take off: Cliff launch More information: [Link not provided]
