Description

The Brotherhood launch site is situated on the crest of the Santa Ynez mountains above Santa Barbara at approximately 3700 feet MSL. This site features a short grassy slope that faces both north and south, although the north-facing launch is generally cleaner and more commonly used. The south-facing launch is rarely utilized and is typically considered only when the Eliminator is unlaunchable. Launching from the north side involves navigating through challenging terrain. Pilots must gain altitude immediately or dive through a gap about 100 feet below and a few hundred yards east of the launch to reach the south side of the mountain. Failing to maintain altitude can result in a difficult wilderness experience. Once over the back, pilots typically encounter moderate rotor conditions until they reach the vicinity of the Eliminator launch to the south. An alternative launch site, known as the Back of the Rack, is located about a mile east of the Brotherhood. This site offers two launch options: one facing more southerly with more setup room but some brushy obstructions, and another facing more east with no obstructions but requiring a launch from the side of a narrow road. Both launches involve a long glide over unlandable terrain before reaching the landing zones. The designated landing zones for these launches are the same Parma Park LZs used for the Eliminator launch. Access to the launch sites is via a paved public road, and any vehicle can reach the launch area. There are no specific regulations for these sites, but Parma Park should be considered at least an intermediate landing zone. Due to the challenging nature of these launches, it is recommended that pilots have solid intermediate or advanced skill levels and seek guidance from local pilots before attempting to fly here. The Brotherhood site is best suited for moderate north to northwest winds, while the Back of the Rack is preferable in winds that are too easterly for the Eliminator.
