Conditions Optimales
Description
Thornhill, located in South Lanarkshire, is a rarely used paragliding site known for its long, steep ridge that provides good lift. The site is managed by the Lanarkshire and Lothian Soaring Club (LLSC).
Altitude at launch is 1280ft/390m, with a height difference of 390ft/120m from top to bottom. The site is suitable for both paragliders and hang-gliders, with easy access from the road to the top of the ridge for launching.
Wind direction is optimal from South to South-West. However, special rules apply: you must attempt to contact the farmer before flying, but if contact is impossible, flying is still permitted. Note that flying is prohibited in April and May during lambing season.
To reach Thornhill, from junction 14 (M74), take the A702 to Carronbridge, then join the A76 to Thornhill. At the Thornhill roundabout, turn left, follow the road over the railway, take an immediate left, and after 0.3 miles, turn right heading northeast. After 2 miles, turn left and go 0.5 miles northwest to the hill.
Parking is available off-road along the unfenced road. The landowner is Mrs. Weir of Townfoot Farm, Thornhill, and can be contacted at 01848 330268.
For airspace considerations, note that TMA D airspace is over 5500ft. The site has good cross-country potential for both paragliders and hang-gliders, with Tinto being approximately 36km due north.
Top landing at Thornhill is excellent with ample flat areas. For bottom landing, hang-gliders can land in any unstocked field, while paragliders should avoid crop fields and livestock.
Be aware of hazards such as power lines at the east end of the site and dykes near landing fields. The RAF often flies in this area midweek.
