Description

The Wasserkuppe South Slopes in Germany offer a versatile paragliding experience, particularly suitable for strong wind training and ground handling. The site features a height difference of 40 to 160 meters, making it ideal for both beginners and experienced pilots. The launch area is slightly lower, and there are limited cross-country opportunities. This site is frequently used and logged under 'Westhang' on Leonardo. The entire area is launchable, and soaring is possible depending on the number of pilots present, though it can get crowded. The upper slope area is well-suited for launching and landing. Landings are typically made near the mountain and valley stations towards Obernhausen. Due to the strong wind conditions, flights are only permitted with a flight director present. A webcam on the roof of the flight school provides hourly updated images, which can be found on the Papillon Rhöner Drachen- und Gleitschirmflugschule website. There is a start fee of 5.00 EUR. For weather updates, you can call the weather phone at +49 (0)6654/696 or check the Meteomedia weather station Wasserkuppe (station 105440). The Papillon Rhöner Drachen- und Gleitschirmflugschule Wasserkuppe offers detailed information and services for pilots. During non-training times, club and guest pilots can fly with a flight director at the Baude (South slope in front of the dome). Training is exclusively conducted at the Weltenseglerhang and the Southwest step, where only flights towards Obernhausen are allowed. Soaring is prohibited near the model flight launch area. Pilots must ensure that pedestrians use the designated paths and avoid walking across the flight field. Kites are also not allowed in the flight area due to safety concerns. In case of mixed flight operations with the flight school, the slope is divided, and training operations must not be crossed. Training usually occurs in lighter wind conditions, making mixed operations rare. Adherence to avoidance rules is mandatory. During the glider club's towing operations at the foot of the slope, flights are restricted to the path marked in red on the map. Non-compliance with this rule poses a severe risk to all pilots. Landings after flights towards Obernhausen are typically made near the mountain or valley station of the Zuckerfeld lift. The upper slope area at the Baude is generally used for strong wind training, launching, flying, and landing. The South slope is mainly utilized during prefrontal weather conditions, with increasing wind as air mass boundaries approach. Sudden wind gusts can occur at any time, even during non-thermal early morning and evening hours. The highest cloud base recorded here was 3200m NN in March 1996. A significant hazard during reverse flights is the fencing around the technical installations at the summit. Due to high flight traffic, the South slopes in Reichenhausen, Kaltennordheim, and Geba are also recommended on weekends. Parking is available at the public parking areas around the Rhön-Info Center on the Wasserkuppe, and the launch sites are accessible on foot. Utilize the extensive facilities available on the Kuppe. Flight directors from the club or flight schools can be found at the Hotel Peterchens Mondfahrt.
