Description
The Abtsrodaer Kuppe launch site, located in Hesse, Germany, is a popular spot for paragliding enthusiasts. With an elevation of 910 meters and a height difference of 188 meters, it offers excellent soaring conditions and the potential for cross-country flights. Top landing is straightforward, making it a favored location for many pilots.
This site is particularly well-suited for soaring and cross-country flying, especially in northeast wind conditions, which can lead to strong thermal developments. The launch area is next to a tree with a windsock, and it is one of the main flying sites on the Wasserkuppe.
The terrain has been used for aviation since the early 20th century and is considered one of the most beautiful training slopes in Germany. It is ideal for ground handling and soaring. However, pilots must adhere to specific rules, such as respecting model aircraft and trainee pilots, and being mindful of the glider and motor flight operations at Wasserkuppe. A launch director is usually present on-site. For more information, you can contact the Wasserkuppe Flight Center at 06654 / 7548 or visit [Wasserkuppe](http://www.wasserkuppe.com).
The launch site is managed by the 1st Drachenflugclub Wasserkuppe, with services provided in cooperation with RDG e.V. Pilots must fly only in the designated blue-marked area after launch and avoid overflying the red-marked airspace reserved for model aircraft. Landing should be done on the main landing field, and ground handling is allowed only in the green-marked area. For any assistance, you can contact the launch director or the shuttle service at 0173/6551646.
Parking is free at the Papillon Flight Center or on the public parking lots of Wasserkuppe. With a club membership card, access to the Abtsrodaer Kuppe parking lot is also available. After launching, pilots should head towards the landing area or catch thermals to the right. Communication is done via PMR Channel 1.1 once 100 meters above the launch site.

Note that mixed flight operations with model aircraft occur at this site, and the area is divided to ensure smooth operations. Delta and paraglider pilots should use the landing field at the foot of Wasserkuppe towards Dietges. A shuttle service is available on weekends from April to October. Avoid flying at dusk and be cautious of the power line between the launch and landing sites.
In case of strong northeast winds, consider flying at Kreuzberg in the Bavarian Rhön, which offers better conditions with less traffic. Parking is available on the public lots at Wasserkuppe, and a permit can be obtained from the gliding school for parking directly at the launch site.
