Description
Located in the Graubünden region of Switzerland, this paragliding site offers a mix of easy to medium difficulty flights, with a fantastic view over the Rhine Valley or Val Lumnezia. The site is regularly used, especially in winter for long glide and leisure flights. Summer flights are also possible, though the launch can be more challenging.
The cable car operates during the ski season and from mid-July to mid-August. The launch site is accessible and not fenced off, situated just below the mountain station, westward, next to the ski slope. The staff is usually helpful in pointing out the exact location.
In winter, you can launch westward, even with skis or snowboards. The launch direction ranges from 155° to 200°, which is considered medium difficulty due to the steep slope ('cliff launch'). The direction from 245° to 300° is easier and often the only sensible option in winter unless the wind conditions are perfect.
Possible flight routes include:
- South to the valley station Vella
- South to the intermediate station Triel (1600m)
- North to Obersaxen
- North into the Rhine Valley (Rueun)
For landing, any mowed meadow can be targeted. In winter, you can land directly above the valley station or in the car park if it's free. If wind conditions are tricky, landing south of the village or southwest near the sports facilities is also feasible.
The southern launch requires precision due to the steep drop-off. If needed, you can descend a bit and launch from a simpler spot, either westward towards Stein or eastward towards Piz Mundaun.
This site is not only great for cross-country flights but also ideal for leisure flying and hiking. However, be aware that the area is within the danger zone LS-D10 Tavanas (Brigels: Flab shooting area). Always check KOSIF for updates.
For walk and fly enthusiasts, there are various tours starting from places like Hitzeggen to Piz Mundaun or Stein. The area is also a beautiful hiking destination in autumn.
