The West start is easier, located at 3000 meters above sea level, near the summit and directly off the right edge of the ski slope. Please be mindful of skiers.
The high alpine terrain requires a briefing from the local flight school. Following all guidelines will reward you with incredible views of the Matterhorn and surrounding peaks. The Unterrothorn area is an alpine yet easily accessible flying site amidst around 20 peaks over 4000 meters high. Proper weather and flight planning are crucial for an extraordinary flying experience.
In good conditions, the area offers beautiful and relatively easy take-off and landing spots with stunning views. However, due to its exposure, it is recommended only for experienced pilots who can handle their equipment in all conditions.
The area promises high alpine flying pleasure with pronounced summer thermals (up to 4500 meters) and often beautiful winter thermals. Those familiar with the area and who catch good weather will find themselves in paragliding heaven. However, beware of extreme valley winds in summer and sudden weather changes. Even less experienced pilots can enjoy the area by joining the local flight school. This site is considered one of the ten most beautiful in Switzerland.
Note: In this valley, AIR ZERMATT pilots are the heroes. Paragliders can land a stone's throw from the heli base, but this requires careful and responsible flying. Helicopters and rescue flights always have the right of way.
Strong valley winds and a special landing spot near the train station. Soaring conditions are dynamic, with updrafts that can sometimes be too strong.
