Conditions Optimales
Description
In the Valais region of Switzerland, the Unterrothorn offers an exceptional paragliding experience. The take-off site is located at 3100 meters, facing both North and South. It is most commonly used during Winter and Summer, with generally good snow coverage and light winds in Winter, and stronger winds in Spring and Summer afternoons.
From the mountain station, it’s just a few minutes to the flat South-facing launch site, which is easy to find. However, the high alpine terrain requires a briefing from the local flight school. Once you’re familiar with the area and follow all guidelines, you’ll be rewarded with incredible views of the Matterhorn and surrounding peaks.
The Unterrothorn is an alpine yet easily accessible flying area, surrounded by around 20 peaks over 4000 meters. Good weather and careful flight planning are essential for a safe and enjoyable flight. The area offers beautiful and relatively easy take-off and landing spots with stunning views, but it is recommended only for experienced pilots who can handle their equipment in all conditions.
The region is known for its strong summer thermals, with bases up to 4500 meters, and often pleasant winter thermals. Experienced pilots who catch good weather can enjoy a heavenly paragliding experience. However, beware of the extreme valley winds in summer and sudden weather changes. Even less experienced pilots can enjoy the area by joining the local flight school.
In this valley, the pilots of AIR ZERMATT are the heroes. Paragliders are allowed to land close to the heli base, but this requires careful and responsible flying. Helicopters and rescue flights always have the right of way.
The area is known for strong valley winds and a special landing spot near the train station. Soaring conditions are excellent, with dynamic updrafts that can sometimes be too strong.
Flight options include a 20-minute glide to Zermatt or a 30-minute glide to Täsch (with prior arrangement with Air Zermatt) in light thermals. Cross-country flights into the Valais are possible with good thermals.
The difficulty level is high due to the pronounced valley wind systems and strong local winds. Landing on the train station roof in Zermatt is also challenging.
Soaring conditions are found directly above the West launch site, over the Rothorn to Oberrothorn, over Sunnegga, and on the other side of the valley towards Mettelhorn with direct overflight.

Accommodation options can be found at [Zermatt](http://www.Zermatt.ch).
Access is only possible up to Täsch, then by train to Zermatt. From Sunnegga, take the gondola to Unterrothorn. The launch site is a flat area for layout, followed by moderately steep and slightly hilly terrain with grass and stones.
