Description
Located in Mornington, Australia, this paragliding site is known for its coastal soaring opportunities. The main takeoff point is situated on a coastal cliff adjacent to the Mornington Golf Course, at an elevation of 27 meters above sea level. The site is regularly used and offers intermediate-level flying conditions.
Takeoff:
There are two cleared launch areas through the scrub at the top of the cliffs. Be prepared for a long, steep climb if you are carrying a hang glider. The takeoff area is a small grassy clearing on the ridge.
Landing:
The primary landing area is a narrow and short beach adjacent to the carpark, suitable for paragliders or low-performance hang gliders. Top landings are strictly prohibited, and landing on the golf course is not allowed. A larger beach is available at Mornington along the cliffs to the left, but be cautious of signposts planted in the sand.
Flight:
Once airborne, the main flying route is approximately one kilometer long. On favorable days, pilots can cross the carpark and fly down to Mount Eliza, covering a total distance of around 8 kilometers. The ridge features well-shaped bowls that allow for good altitude gain.
Hazards/Comments:
The site has practically no landing area and can experience strong wind gradients on certain days. Additionally, golfers may complain about pilots disrupting their games. Avoid flying directly above the mansions towards Mornington, as the landowners can become very irate.
Location:
The site is located 4 kilometers north of Mornington, accessible via the Nepean Highway. Turn into Sunnyside Road and drive towards the beach carpark, passing the beach huts. From there, it is a long climb up the cliffs to the launch sites. Refer to Melways map 104 K6 for detailed directions.
