Description
Sunnyside, located in Mornington, Australia, is a coastal soaring site adjacent to the Mornington Golf Course. This site is rarely used and serves as an alternative takeoff point. The takeoff area consists of two cleared spots through the scrub at the top of the cliffs, requiring a long, steep climb if carrying a hang glider.
The main landing area is a narrow beach adjacent to the carpark, suitable for paragliders or low-performance hang gliders. Landings on top of the cliffs are strictly prohibited, and landing in the golf course is not allowed. A larger beach is available at Mornington along the cliffs to the left, but be cautious of signposts planted in the sand.
Once airborne, the main flight path extends around a kilometer, with the potential to fly down to Mount Eliza on a good day, covering a total distance of approximately 8 km. The ridge features well-shaped bowls that allow for good altitude gain.
Be aware of the hazards, including limited landing areas, strong wind gradients on certain days, and potential complaints from golfers. Avoid flying directly above the mansions towards Mornington to prevent upsetting the landowners.
To reach Sunnyside, drive 4 km north of Mornington down the Nepean Highway, take Sunnyside Rd, and drive past the beach huts at the beach carpark. The launches are located up the cliffs to the left. For more information, contact Jiri Stipek at 0414 332 737 or visit Skyhigh.
