Paragliding Slocan Ridge, BC
Best Conditions
Optimal Wind Direction
Optimal Speed (mph)
Description
Located in the Slocan Valley, British Columbia, this paragliding site offers a unique flying experience primarily used for thermal soaring. The launch area is situated next to communication towers and requires a 4WD vehicle for the last half-mile of the drive. The site is historically an ancient hang gliding (HG) location but is also suitable for paragliding (PG). It is highly recommended to contact local pilots before flying.
The upper launch is at an elevation of 6550 feet above sea level, while the lower launch, known as Thompsons Knob, is at 2650 feet. The landing zone (LZ) is along the Slocan River at 1650 feet above sea level. The site is informal and does not have strict regulations, but insurance through HPAC or USHPA is required.
The site is accessible via Pedro Creek Road, with specific directions to reach the launch area. The launch itself is a small ramp facing southwest, located beside a repeater tower. Paragliders can launch beside the ramp, although it is a challenging launch that often requires a reverse launch technique.
Flying conditions vary by season, with the best times being summer and fall. The site is known for its ridge and thermal flying, with potential for glass-offs and wave conditions. Advanced descent techniques are mandatory due to the potential for strong evening convection and quick-moving storms.
There are two main landing fields. The southernmost field, Kosiancic's field, is a triangular area 5 km north of Crescent Valley. It requires careful approach due to surrounding trees and powerlines. The northern field is near the Co-op Video Store in Slocan Park and is a large, easily landable area with a windsock for guidance.
