Description
The Säntis, located approximately 10 km south-southwest of Appenzell, Switzerland, offers a challenging paragliding experience. The base station at Schwägalp is accessible year-round via well-maintained roads, and public transportation options include regular Postauto services from Urnäsch and Nesslau in Toggenburg.
The Säntis peak, at 2,502 meters above sea level, is highly alpine and recommended only for experienced pilots. The terrain requires sure-footedness and a head for heights. The weather conditions can be extreme, similar to those found in high mountain ranges.
Direct takeoff from the Säntis is not permitted. Pilots must descend from the mountain station via the Lisengrat path, which is secured with steel cables and stairs, towards the Rotsteinpass. The launch site is oriented west-southwest and is highly susceptible to wind. Flights should only be attempted in weak W-SW winds. The launch area becomes steep quickly, necessitating excellent and secure launch techniques. Takeoff towards the east is prohibited due to a restricted area.
The best flying conditions are typically found from late summer to the first snowfall in October. Summer flights are best undertaken early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid the more challenging midday conditions. The flight usually ends in Unterwasser, as the northern area is a wildlife protection zone with a minimum flight altitude of 3,000 meters. 'Mountain hopping' is popular here; after landing in Unterwasser, pilots can take the cable car to Iltios/Chäserugg and continue their flight towards Walenstadt.
