Best Conditions
Description
At an altitude of 2488 meters, this paragliding site in Switzerland offers medium-level flights, primarily to Lake Silvaplana. The site is rarely used, with small to medium flights being the norm. The flight area record is 5.0 km. For more information, visit [Corvatsch](http://www.corvatsch.ch/).
The launch site is located at Margun, northwest of the ski lift. It is easily identifiable on the map and from the middle station. The hike from the middle station to the launch site takes about 30-45 minutes downhill.
Despite its seemingly simple appearance, the launch area has several challenges:
- The terrain is very uneven, increasing the risk of tripping.
- There are stones and rocks with sharp edges where lines can get caught.
- Due to the hike, pilots need to be disciplined and ready to descend (approximately two hours) if conditions are unsuitable.
- Afternoon thermals rise directly up the mountain, creating turbulence, especially when combined with winds from Maloka.
The coordinates provided indicate the best launch spot, located below the path.
Flight Experience:
Flying at the 4000-meter boundary and soaring is possible here. Thermal activity is present from the afternoon until early evening, particularly around Munt Arlas. However, cross-country flying opportunities are limited, making soaring a more practical option.
Difficulty:
This site is suitable only for pilots who can independently assess complex conditions. Even on weekends, few pilots are present, so you will need to rely on your own judgment.
Three Important Tips:
1. High altitudes come with known dangers: expect turbulence at the summit.
2. Pay close attention to the Malojawind, which can reach 7 Beaufort by 11:00 AM on clear summer days. Using binoculars to observe the lake and surfers for signs of wind conditions is advisable. The Kite-surf Club in Silvaplana offers an SMS service with wind and weather updates every ten minutes. Send "LSP WIND" to 9234 (20Rp./SMS) for information on wind direction, strength in knots, and air temperature (as of August 2005). This service may not work with foreign phones.
3. Avoid the path to Muottas Muragl. Additionally, do not overfly the Samedan airfield and maintain the mandatory 5 km distance.
Over Lake Silvaplana, expect significant sink rates (4 m/s) during Malojawind, possibly due to wave motion. There may also be an updraft band.
