Description

Pine Mountain in Ojai, California, offers a main takeoff at an elevation of 2159 meters with a height difference of 900 meters. This site is known for its thermal, ridge, and convergence flying, making it a good spot for cross-country (XC) flights. The takeoff is easily accessible by car, located just off the road east of Reyes Campground. The launch area is small but manageable. The site provides a scenic view of the Sespe gorge and is regularly used by paragliders. It offers good thermalling conditions, and XC flights are possible. The launch is situated on the south side, featuring a smooth, unobstructed 45-degree dirt ramp at 7000 feet. This area is typically a thermal generator, although prevailing winds can sometimes make it challenging. The north side launch is at 5500 feet and is a small path cut through brush and trees. This launch is generally used in ridge soaring conditions or when thermals are too weak to overcome the north wind. It can be turbulent and has obstructions on both sides. Landing zones (LZs) on the south side include a 150 ft. by 200 ft. dirt turnout from Highway 33 and a large, brush-strewn field nearby. The wind in these areas typically funnels northwest or southeast. On the north side, primary LZs include a large fenced field behind the Ozena ranger station and another field at the corner of Highway 33 and Lockwood Valley Road. Many other landing options are available along Highway 33 and Lockwood Valley Road. The site is accessible by any vehicle via paved or smooth dirt roads, although these may be impassable in winter due to snow. There are no specific regulations, but a Hang 3 rating is recommended for the south launch and a Hang 4 for the north side. Conditions are generally favorable from spring through fall, with typical summer days offering altitudes of 9,000 to 11,000 feet above mean sea level (MSL), and even higher on the best days. Ideal flying conditions occur on unstable days with tropical moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. Strong north winds are usually unfavorable, and stable high pressure can lead to less exciting flights. It's best to arrive early on moist days to avoid over-development.
