Description
The takeoff point at Mottarone can be easily reached by car. Once you arrive at the end of the dirt parking lot, proceed down the dirt path (preferably on foot) until you reach the terminal pylon of the ski lift, visible on the left near the snowcat depot. Facing the lake, take off from the meadow to the left of the ski lift.
An alternative takeoff is available from the mountain summit (H 1455 m), which can be reached on foot in about 15 minutes. While this hike is not necessary for the flight, it offers rewarding panoramic views.
Flights typically occur in the border area between the large lakes and the Alps, providing pilots of all levels with stunning scenery. From Mottarone, you can see Lake Orta, Lake Maggiore, Lake Mergozzo, and several Lombardy lakes. To the northwest, the Alpine chain with the impressive Monte Rosa massif is visible.
Flying at Mottarone is possible year-round, though the recommended season is from March to October. In winter, flights are often limited to gliding, but conditions improve significantly in the warmer months. Due to the southwest-facing slope, it's best to wait until the afternoon for optimal thermal activity, which usually remains strong until sunset. Many pilots visit Mottarone for their second flight of the day during this time.
