Description
The main takeoff point at Mottarone is easily accessible by car. Once you reach the end of the dirt parking lot, proceed down the dirt path (preferably on foot) until you reach the terminal pylon of the ski lift, visible on the left near the snowcat depot. Facing the lake, take off from the meadow to the left of the ski lift.
You can also take off from the mountain summit (H 1455 m), which is about a 15-minute walk. While this hike doesn't significantly enhance the flight, it offers rewarding panoramic views.
Flights typically occur in the border area between the large lakes and the Alps, providing pilots of all levels with stunning scenery. From Mottarone, you can see Lake Orta, Lake Maggiore, Lake Mergozzo, and several Lombardy lakes. To the northwest, the Alpine chain with the imposing Monte Rosa massif is visible.
Flying at Mottarone is possible year-round, though the recommended season is from March to October. In winter, flights are often limited to gliding, but conditions improve significantly in the warmer months. Due to the southwest exposure of the slope, it's best to wait until the afternoon for optimal thermal activity. Many pilots visit Mottarone for their second flight of the day, as the thermals rising from the rocky slope above Omegna are usually generous and remain active until sunset.
