Description
Laguna is an East-facing paragliding site in California, overlooking the Anza-Borrego desert. It is known for its excellent thermalling and cross-country (XC) potential, particularly in the Spring and Fall. The site is best flown in the early morning when the East wind tapers off to a West wind, creating a North/South convergence. However, strong winds can often cause the site to be blown out, making it generally too windy at other times of the year.
This site is currently open only for SDHGPA (San Diego Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association) members and is under strict regulations due to its sensitive nature. It requires a special use permit and is under constant scrutiny by state and national agencies. Therefore, flying here without an active SDHGPA member and a complete site briefing is not allowed.
Laguna is often compared to Walt’s Point in the Owens Valley for its thermal and convergence flying. It is particularly good in pre- and post-monsoonal conditions. The site is popular among skilled intermediate and advanced pilots due to its excellent XC potential, with flights over 100 miles being attainable.
The site has two main launches: the lower cliff launch, accessible via a paved road, and the upper launch, which requires a high-clearance vehicle or a hike. The upper launch is better suited for paragliders, while the lower launch is more appropriate for hang gliders. The upper launch is at 5,630 feet MSL with a vertical drop of 3,501 feet to the Mason Valley LZ at 2,129 feet MSL.
Flying at Laguna requires solid launching skills and a thorough understanding of the site’s protocols. The nearest landing zone (LZ) is a 45-minute drive from the launch, and conditions can change rapidly, making it essential to have a dedicated driver. The site often transitions to extremely strong East winds during Santa Ana conditions, and summer thermal conditions can be very strong, making it inadvisable for paragliding.
Desert survival skills are also necessary, as some sections of XC routes are remote with limited retrieve options, requiring a 2-3 day hike out on foot. There are known keep-out areas and minimum altitude requirements that must be observed.
